On the Issues

Infrastructure

When neighborhoods were built along Pheasant Branch Road in our district, developers didn’t have to pay their fair share and make them safe. Middleton made a smart move by requiring funds in escrow for the High Road reconstruction from developers, which I learned when knocking on doors (and the city could publicize better). However, there is no plan to improve Pheasant Branch Road, Middleton’s most dangerous road for drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians right here in District 6. The portion through the wetland from Whittlesey Road north to the town of Springfield border is the worst and bumpiest section and has serious drainage issues. My opponent worked for the city’s community development department and was an alder when these neighborhoods were built. When I’m your alder, I want to get improvements to Pheasant Branch Road moving and will ensure roads are fixed when the developments are built and costs are lower. I’ll also advocate for stormwater improvements to Graber Pond in the Misty Valley neighborhood and through the Pheasant Crossing subdivision to minimize any future flooding.

In addition, I’ve learned that the water tower across High Road from our district needs replacement. We will likely need a third water tower at some point as well. I want to make sure our water utility has the tools and facilities they need to best serve Middleton’s residents and businesses.

Housing

Affordable housing is a major issue both in Middleton and other local communities. Middleton extended Tax Incremental District (TID) 3 for one year to generate revenue for affordable housing, and those funds will be available soon. I want to put these dollars to work in a responsible way but also make sure they are being used as promptly as possible, not sitting unused for years in an account.

Property Taxes

Property taxes in Middleton are high when compared with many communities in the region. I plan to work to keep the tax rate as level as possible, and get TIF districts closed as soon as possible versus waiting until the state says we must close them. I’m concerned about the lavishness of the Community Campus proposal that the majority of the council wants, which is both excessive and would significantly increase our already high property taxes.

Public Safety

I’m a strong supporter of our excellent Middleton Police Department. I also plan to practice what I preach as an alder and believe alders must promote and model public safety in our own behaviors as elected community leaders. For instance, I pledge to never attend a council or committee meeting under the influence of alcohol so I can be the best representative possible for my constituents.
